Zabaikalsk Border Checkpoint to Increase Capacity by 5.5 Times: Large-Scale Reconstruction

A large-scale reconstruction is underway at the Zabaikalsk International Automobile Checkpoint (MAPP), the largest border crossing on the Russian-Chinese border. The works, which officially started at the end of 2025, are being carried out under the supervision of Rosgranstroy as part of the national project 'Efficient Transport System'.

According to the Russian Ministry of Transport, upon completion of all modernization stages, the checkpoint's capacity will increase 5.5 times, reaching 2,400 vehicles per day (including 1,600 freight trucks). To eliminate queues and speed up customs clearance, the area of the checkpoint will be significantly expanded: the number of traffic lanes will increase from 17 to 28. The project involves the construction and reconstruction of 147 various buildings and infrastructure facilities.

An important feature is that the reconstruction is being carried out in stages and without stopping the operation of the active checkpoint. The full completion of the Zabaikalsk MAPP modernization is scheduled for 2028.

Retailchina.pro Commentary: The large-scale infrastructure expansion of Zabaikalsk is a critical step in eliminating the logistics 'bottleneck' at the land border. Increasing the number of lanes and capacity will create a fundamental basis for trade growth. For foreign economic activity participants, suppliers, and retail chains, this means increased stability in supply chains, predictability of road delivery times from China, and a reduction in costs associated with long waits for cargo at the border.
